James Hetfield told the Sphere audience on October 10 that Metallica’s shows offer a break from outside divisions. As of October 12, the 24-date Las Vegas residency was scheduled to run through March 2027.
Metallica’s first Sphere dates fell on October 1 and 3. A week later, James Hetfield told the Las Vegas audience the shows were for music, not political persuasion.
Metallica opened its Sphere residency on October 1 and 3 with two completely different set lists, accompanied by visual material created specifically for the venue.
Before laying out that position, Hetfield thanked fans for the time and money required to attend the residency.
Hetfield’s message from the stage
“Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bullshit,” Hetfield told the crowd. “We are here… no bullshit… we’re here to forget about all the outside shit, OK? Metallica’s agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby!” Breitbart’s account of the remarks also notes Hetfield’s wish to help the audience forget what was happening outside.
The distinction was clear: Hetfield framed the concerts as a break from outside arguments.
The residency is planned as 24 performances: 12 Thursday-and-Saturday pairs across October, November, January, February and March, with a different set list promised for each night. As of October 12, the next shows were scheduled for October 15 and 17, and the final dates for March 11 and 13, 2027.
Artists using the stage for politics
Hetfield’s remarks came as other artists made political statements during live shows. Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour following an onstage pro-Palestine speech. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello hosted the politically focused Power to the People event. Rolling Stone Italia placed Hetfield’s comments in the wider debate over musicians’ public statements, including disputes concerning Gaza and Palestine and the Ed Sheeran–Macklemore conflict. Hetfield did not name a particular artist or organization.
His position echoes comments in a 2017 interview with La Tercera, where he said politics “separates people” and described his aim as bringing them together through music. Vegas Report’s coverage of the residency launch put the run at 24 dates on select weekends through March.
The next performances were scheduled for October 15 and 17, with the final shows set for March 11 and 13, 2027.
